I think I just wasn't in the right mindset at the time. His gradual lowering into madness was so intense. I could recognize it was art... but I wasn't ready to go where it was taking me. Yeah, Into the Wild continues to be a really powerful, and strangely inspiring, experience to me. I've never been much of a nature explorer myself, for perhaps obvious reasons, but this movie stimulated me on so many levels. It's intellectually ambitious - if not flawless - but unlike many movies who share that quality, it is also a beautifully conceived, and distinctly cinematic, picture. There are examples of self-proclaimed 'important' movies that would have made for eminently interesting panel discussions - like 'Lions for Lambs', 'Doubt', 'Maria Full of Grace', 'The Reader' etc - but that nevertheless came off as lacking both the intellectual curiosity and honesty, and the awareness of the great storytelling opportunities that lies in film as such a wonderfully rich and expressive art form. (Enough with the rambling. Maybe the Alaska images prompted me to channel Palin's cringe-inducing June 3 announcement or something) You're the poet, so I guess I'll just have to say thanks.
